Abstract

The Pledge of Ridwan took place in Dhu al-Qi'dah of the sixth year of the Hijra during the Muslims' encampment at Hudaybiyyah; it occurred when news circulated that Uthman ibn Affan—the Prophet’s (PBUH) envoy—had been killed, prompting the Muslims to pledge allegiance to the Prophet (PBUH) beneath a tree. The Quran recounts this event in Verse 18 of Surah Al-Fath, highlighting Divine pleasure with the believers who pledged allegiance "under the tree," and speaking of the tranquility bestowed upon them and the imminent reward awaiting them. Historical sources report this event in the context of the Hudaybiyyah negotiations and the political climate of the time. The account found in *Sirat Ibn Hisham* emphasizes the fact of the pledge itself while noting differing interpretations—specifically, whether it was a pledge "unto death" or a pledge "not to flee"—and mentions discrepancies regarding the number of participants. *Tarikh al-Tabari* also addresses the number of attendees and the manner in which the pledge was conducted, presenting accounts that vary slightly in their details. A comparative study of these reports alongside Verse 18 of Surah Al-Fath reveals an alignment between the Quranic narrative and historical accounts regarding the occurrence of the pledge, yet their functions and narrative perspectives differ. Rather than seeking to reconstruct historical minutiae, the Quran articulates the spiritual significance of the pledge and Divine pleasure with the believers; conversely, *Sirah* and historical sources explain the event within the broader chain of occurrences at Hudaybiyyah and the dynamics between the Muslims and the Quraysh. By comparing the accounts of Ibn Hisham, Ya'qubi, and Tabari with the Quranic text, this study aims to examine the differences in the selection of details, narrative style, and the historical and religious significance of the Pledge of Ridwan.
