The health of students is one of the most important components of human and social development in any society, and schools, due to their continuous and extensive contact with children and adolescents, have a fundamental position in shaping their healthy behaviors and lifestyles. In the meantime, physical education and school physical activity are not only a means of increasing physical fitness or teaching sports skills, but can also be an effective tool for strengthening mental health, improving social relationships, increasing concentration, and creating a positive attitude towards physical activity. The World Health Organization recommends that children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years have at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day on average, and that more intense activities and activities that strengthen muscles and bones be included in their program at least three days a week. In addition to increasing mobility, high-quality physical education education can also strengthen motor skills, cooperation, responsibility, self-regulation, and a sense of belonging to school. UNESCO considers quality physical education to be an approach beyond simple sports activity and emphasizes the physical, psychological, social, inclusive and diverse dimensions of activities (UNESCO, 201). Recent research also shows that school physical activity programs can be effective in some aspects of mental health and especially social well-being of students, although the degree of effectiveness depends on the type of program, duration of implementation, method of implementation and level of student participation (Viskari et al., 2025). Accordingly, the present article, with a promotional approach, examines the position of physical education in schools and its role in promoting the physical and mental health of students.
